Vishal Bharadwaj's latest film Saat Khoon Maaf
is a disturbing film, it's not a satisfying watch, but
it's a compelling watch for sure.
The film boasts of a stupendous cast, and the crew is also top-notch.
Yet it fails to deliver and - more importantly - fails to connect.

I had loved the original short story by Ruskin Bond on which this film is based. But when I came to know that it was being made into a film, I scratched my head in disbelief, as the tale was not at all filmable as per conventional wisdom is concerned. The horror was required to be almost gothic. The macabre humor was unlikely to be portrayed in film.
My apprehensions came true when I saw the film last Sunday. I was annoyed to see the extensions, and the silly justificational stance put forth in the screenplay. The film is over-indulgent, and flawed (some of the period details are far from authentic) and way too over the top to be entertaining. On the whole: a disappointing dud from Vishal Bharadwaj (who had never gone so wrong before) despite overpowering visuals, and the 'Daaaaaarrllllling' song & dance number. Even the background musical score is unsatisfactory (too loud, too melodramatic). I wonder how senile must Ruskin Bond have been to allow the mellow ending (maybe he was too tempted just to share screen space with Priyanka Chopra)!
